Fabric Definition:
Qiviut is the exceptionally soft, fine, and incredibly warm underwool of the Muskox, prized for its lightness, superior thermal insulation, and complete absence of prickle, rivaling even the finest cashmere and vicuña.
Composition:
100% Keratin (Protein) – extremely fine, hollow core; micron count typically 15-18 microns, significantly finer than human hair
Texture:
Incredibly soft, downy, airy, and smooth; feels like a cloud, with a gentle, matte luster; has no guard hairs, making it completely non-itchy
Stretch Level:
Low (Natural crimp provides some give, but lacks resilience; best blended with silk or wool for shape retention)
Fabric Construction:
Woven (e.g., Qiviut Suiting, Scarves) or Knitted (e.g., Fine Jersey, Lace Knits, Rib, Cable)
GSM Range:
150-500 GSM (Light for shawls, medium for sweaters, heavy for arctic outerwear)
Breathability:
Excellent – Highly breathable, yet retains body heat exceptionally well due to hollow fibers
Moisture Management:
Excellent – Hollow core absorbs and releases moisture vapor, maintaining a dry microclimate in extreme conditions
Durability:
High – Despite fineness, the fiber is surprisingly strong and resilient; resists pilling and matting
Thermal Properties:
Exceptional – Eight times warmer than sheep wool; provides outstanding insulation against severe wind and cold; extreme warmth-to-weight ratio
