Waterproof fabric is engineered to prevent water penetration while often offering breathability, used extensively in outdoor gear, rainwear, tents, and protective clothing for wet environments.
Composition:
Polyester, Nylon, PU (Polyurethane), TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane), ePTFE (Gore-Tex), PVC, Polyethylene, PTFE, blends with elastane for stretch
Texture:
Smooth, slick, rubbery or matte, crisp to soft, waterproof feel, may have a sheen, some are crinkly, others soft
Stretch Level:
Low to Moderate (coated fabrics have limited stretch; elastane adds some)
Fabric Construction:
Woven face + coating or membrane (PU, TPU, ePTFE), laminates (2L, 2.5L, 3L), nonwoven, microporous membranes
GSM Range:
150-500 GSM (light to heavy; 200-400 GSM for jackets)
Breathability:
Low to Moderate (breathable membranes allow vapor escape; coated PU is less breathable)
Moisture Management:
Very Low (waterproof, impermeable to water; moisture vapor can escape in breathable types)
Durability:
High (durable, weather-resistant, long-lasting, abrasion-resistant depending on face fabric)
Thermal Properties:
Moderate; provides windproof protection; can trap heat; insulates depending on lining
