Fabric Definition:
Sunn Hemp is a strong, versatile, and fast-growing bast fiber extracted from the Crotalaria juncea plant, prized for its high tensile strength, low lignin content, and excellent biodegradability, making it an ideal eco-friendly fiber for ropes, nets, and sustainable apparel.
Composition:
100% Cellulose (Bast Fiber) – low lignin content (similar to flax), high cellulose, soft and easy to spin
Texture:
Smooth (for a bast fiber), slightly coarse but softer than jute, matte to slightly lustrous, with a dry, clean hand and a natural cream to light brown color
Stretch Level:
None (Inherently no stretch; blends with cotton or elastane provide flexibility)
Fabric Construction:
Woven (e.g., Sunn Hemp Canvas, Shirting, Blends with cotton) or Knitted (with cotton blends)
GSM Range:
100-400 GSM (Light for shirting, medium for suiting, heavy for canvas and bags)
Breathability:
Excellent – Highly breathable, excellent moisture absorption and release
Moisture Management:
Good – Absorbs moisture efficiently and dries moderately quickly
Durability:
High – Good tensile strength, durable, and resistant to abrasion in dry conditions
Thermal Properties:
Good – Similar to linen; provides cooling comfort in warm weather, moderate insulation in cooler weather
