Composition:
100% Cotton, Viscose/Rayon, Polyester, Nylon, Silk, or blends with Spandex/Elastane for stretch; often with a backing weave
Texture:
Soft, dense pile, smooth surface, rich luster, luxurious hand, can be crushed or textured, drapes beautifully, slight sheen
Stretch Level:
Low to Moderate (woven velvet has little stretch; elastane in some for stretch)
Fabric Construction:
Woven (Plain weave with additional warp or weft pile) or Knitted (velvet knit)

180-400 GSM (medium to heavy; 200-350 GSM for apparel)
